10 Best Psychological Horrors Of The Modern Era

2. Jacob's Ladder

Jacob's Ladder was released in 1990, following the story of Jacob Singer, a postal worker who attempts to hide his mental struggles of a past life. The film plays on misdirection, distrust and a fractured mind, with flashbacks and hallucinations filling each plot point - showing us Jacob struggling to deal with the aftermath of his experiences in the military.

There are moments, like in other films in this list, that are hard to wrap your head around, whilst adding in demonic monsters including ones with no face that you will definitely see in your nightmares for a long time. If you're looking for a thriller type that plays on the human mind with demonic inhuman characters then this is for you.

A remake of the movie was released in 2019, and, some may argue, that this is just as good. Give the original a watch first, cry in the corner for a bit and reset your brain before beginning on any other further instalments. You have been warned, watch if you dare either way.
