2. Double 0 Status (Casino Royale)

Acting as the first scene in a reboot for one of cinema€™s most storied franchises, the opening to Casino Royale carried a heavy burden. It was clear that this would set the tone for the series going forward, and its more realistic and gritty approach was immediately apparent.

Set in black and white, we see the James Bond origins as it were. For one, we€™re introduced to Bond the fierce killer, as he brutally beats and drowns a man for his first kill. Then we get to see Bond as the smooth operator, smartly having already removed Dryden€™s clip from his gun. In minutes, the series has re-established the most important elements of 007€™s character.

Of course, the package is all completed by the inclusion of the famous gun barrel sequence. Traditionally depicted at the very beginning of the film, here, it€™s brilliantly incorporated into the scene itself as Bond finishes off his first kill.

It€™s one thing to be told that Bond is great at what he does, it€™s another to be shown it. This pre-credits scene concisely and effectively proved that the new James Bond was ready for action.
