10 Cancelled Horror Movies That Could Have Been Legendary
4. Scream 5
Wes Craven's Scream and its initial two sequels quite literally changed the entire horror landscape following their releases in the mid 1990s, not only spawning one of the best spoof film series' ever created, but also ushering in an era of meta, self-aware releases such as Cabin in the Woods.
Whilst there's a whole host of problems with Screams 2 and 3 as films, it was a welcome sight seeing Scream 4 announced and released in 2011. Wes Craven returned to direct and there was definitely a noticeable improvement in how the story panned out, benefitting from the injection of new technologies and social media into the mix of things.
Craven went one step further by announcing that Scream 4 could have well been the start of a new trilogy of films in the series, building on the roots of the fourth film and taking the 'whodunit' aspects of the films into the anonymous world of the internet. However, things began to go south when the studio objected to the initial bleak, open-ended ending that had initially been posted as the starting point for a sequel.
Craven's passing in 2015 and the transfer of Scream from big screen premier to Netflix original looked like it might have spelled the end for the franchise, however a new film by Spyglass has been confirmed to start filming in May 2020, though it will feature a whole new cast so it remains to be seen how close it will tie in to the original continuity.
