With X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the studio was given the chance to head back into the past of the established X-Men film universe, which offered a number of opportunities to feature some of the mutant characters fans had been hoping to see for years. Characters like Gambit (played by Taylor Kitsch) mixed with some other less-desired characters like the Blob (Kevin Durand) and Agent Zero (Daniel Henney). The movie explored Logan's life as a soldier, a mercenary, a government project, and finally the amnesiac Wolverine we were used to. However, X-Men Origins: Wolverine also acted as an origin story for the fan favorite Merc-with-a-Mouth Wade Wilson AKA Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds). Given the perfect opportunity to properly springboard this extremely popular character into his own spin-off, the studio choose to instead butcher the potential of Reynolds as Deadpool with possibly the worst comic book character adaptation we have ever seen. Sewing the character's mouth shut and giving him ridiculously impractical Baraka-like blades in his arms, not to mention random mutant powers. These were just a few of the problems with the character, and stood out among a number of other controversial moments in the film. Reynolds had been very vocal about the character and his desire to do a solo movie, but this portrayal in X-Men Origins pretty much erased that plan, though the project is still sitting in developmental hell.
