10 Directors Who Could Save Dying Movies Franchises

2. Jennifer Kent - Insidious

The Insidious franchise has been something of a forgotten entity following James Wan's departure. It seemed to motivate a new, much-appreciated trend in the horrific side of Hollywood where scares were earned rather than forced through loud sound effects.

Both Wan-directed installments held this in place and even Insidious 3 managed to for the most part. Then The Last Key came out and it became a cheap jump scare-fest. Due to the series losing its identity, as well as the plots being held ransom by the canon's timeline where every sequel is actually a prequel, Insidious needs a fresh start. James Wan's busy, so who should take charge? Well, Jennifer Kent, that's who.

Anyone who has seen The Babadook knows that Jennifer Kent is a master at crafting densely atmospheric experiences that don't need jump scares to get under your skin. Frightening visuals are used as storytelling options where the monsters represent something more abstract (and recognizable) than you think. She's a firm believer in that same old-school approach to horror that Wan employs and it'd fit Insidious perfectly.

Kent is an excellent filmmaker that is undoubtedly deserving of more recognition among moviegoers. She won't need a huge budget, just let her do what she does best and Blumhouse will have a hit on their hands.
