10 Directors Who Could Save Dying Movies Franchises
3. Drew Goddard - Men In Black
Drew Goddard, for those who aren't aware of his work, specializes in projects that seem simple at first, but end up much deeper than anticipated. Cabin in the Woods takes the audience's preconceived notions of what they believe to be a standard slasher flick and turn it into a clever, meta-commentary on the horror movie genre. Bad Times at the El Royale took a seemingly straightforward mystery and unveiled its intense set of intricacy, allowing it to be so much more.
What Goddard excels at is taking well-tread territory and discovering a hidden layer of potential that nobody noticed before. This is something the Men in Black franchise needs desperately. The original film back in 2001 came out of nowhere and was a greatly refreshing inclusion into the sci-fi genre.
However, its two sequels lacked the same sharpness and were mostly held together by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Sony's attempt to reboot the brand with MIB: International was not ill-founded, but it was just a soulless mess that didn't care about what made that first MIB film special.
At the moment, MIB doesn't seem to have a place in future movie theaters because each installment is still trying to live up to the first one. If you're looking for someone who has the resume and imagination to do it, this renaissance man is the guy.
