10 Directors Who Suffered The Most In 2015

By Connor Briggs-Morris /

5. Joe Wright (Pan)

Joe Wright is a very capable director who€™s best known for delivering solid takes on older novels (Pride and Prejudice, Anna Karenina and Atonement). He also showed to have a unique take on action with the thriller Hanna. Unfortunately, it seems that his success streak came to an end this year. Big budget movies are not for everyone and whether through the loss of creative control or the weight of studio expectations, many great directors have fallen victims to blockbusters gone bad. Despite a unique take on the material, Pan was a commercial failure and while not thought of as outright terrible, it certainly didn€™t bring in the stellar reviews that Wright€™s films have gotten in the past. But surely Wright€™s reputation ought to more than make up for one misstep? Apparently Lionsgate doesn€™t think so, because shortly after Pan flopping at the box office, they decided to cut off talks with him in regards to directing their Julius Caesar epic. It€™s easy to speculate on how a movie€™s failure will impact a director€™s career, but in this case, one bad film may have already spoiled an entire studio's opinion on an otherwise reliable director.
