10 Famous Unmade Comic Book Movies We WISH We Could Have Seen
5. Batman Beyond
The proposition of a live-action Batman Beyond movie has recently started making the rounds again following rumors that Warner Bros. were toying with the idea of having Michael Keaton reprise the role of Bruce Wayne in a standalone spinoff similar to how they treated Joaquin Phoenix's Joker.
However, as awesome as that sounds it also appears to be a little far-fetched given that the Dark Knight is already in the midst of another reboot under the direction of Matt Reeves.
Batman Beyond had almost been given the go-ahead before back in 2000 when the studio were searching for a brand-new take on the character after Batman & Robin had almost killed the franchise completely, and even hired the co-creators of the fan favorite animated show to write the script. Remember the Titans director Boaz Yakin was set to get behind the camera, and the tantalizing prospect of casting Clint Eastwood as the long-retired Bruce Wayne was floated too.
A futuristic, cyberpunk-influenced version of the Caped Crusader that combines the superhero genre with sci-fi and neo-noir may have been a huge risk, but if they'd pulled it off, we could have ended up with a Batman movie for the ages. It would have brought something entirely new to a genre that was set to explode in popularity thanks to Bryan Singer's X-Men and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man.
The project was in active development for well over a year before Warner Bros. got cold feet and pulled the plug, deciding that a more straightforward adaptation was a much safer bet. Seeing as that led directly to The Dark Knight Trilogy, it looks as though they were right in the end.
