Despite boasting two talented stars in Lucy Liu and Antonio Banderas along with a $70m budget, Ecks vs Sever is nothing short of terrible. Director Wych Kaosayananda (pretentiously shortening his credit to Kaos) delivers an interminably dull actioner that takes itself far too seriously given the preposterous narrative, clunky dialogue and numerous cliches that plague every single one of the movie's 91 minutes. Banderas and Liu play Ecks and Sever respectively, seemingly attempting to outdo each other when it comes to acting completely disinterested. The plot is nonsense, the actors seem to have turned up only for the paycheck and the visuals aim for cool and stylish but instead wind up as over-indulgent and just plain boring. Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever tanked at the box office and earned less than $20m, putting another huge dent in the reputation of video game movies in the process.
