Many musicals have transferred West End and Broadway success to the silver screen but, despite his theatre credentials, Andrew Lloyd Webber has never won over cinema audiences. There are numerous problems with Joel Schumachers Phantom Of The Opera, not least the casting of Gerard Butler, a relative unknown with practically no singing experience to his name. The powerful ballads never have the same impact as in the theatre and Butler is clearly not up to the role. Unusual casting may have worked with Michael Crawford for the stage version but, for a big budget movie, someone with a bit more star quality and singing talent wouldnt have gone amiss.
