10 Great Horror Movies You Definitely Missed In 2023
How did these gems go unnoticed?
Another year, another slew of spine-tingling movies for horror advocates to sink their teeth into. 2023 has delivered some truly unique shockers, including Beau Is Afraid, Skinamarink, and No One Will Save You.
But that's not all. Talk to Me proved A24 is still at the top of their game. Thanksgiving was an incredible return to form for Eli Roth. Saw X and Evil Dead Rise turned out better than anyone anticipated, reigniting interest in both franchises.
With so much terrifying content being churned out, it's challenging to watch them all, especially when a lot of slashers and creature features came out at the wrong time or had a limited run. If a horror flick didn't get advertised enough or was only released in certain countries, even the biggest fans may not know it exists. Even though veterans of the genre think they got round to watching all of this year's hidden gems, there are a few that might have escaped their attention.
Although not all of these entries are masterpieces, they have enough creativity and innovation to warrant a watch. However, there are others on this list that are so spectacular, it's strange they didn't cause a bigger stir.
10. Influencer
Influencer centres around social media guru Madison and a traveller, CW, whom she befriends while on holiday. Despite CW's innocent demeanour, it's obvious she covets Madison's glamorous lifestyle to the point where she will do anything to become her.
Based on the premise, Influencer sounds like a by-the-numbers slasher. But this subversive flick is anything but predictable. Before the first act is finished, the story goes in a direction no one is expecting, which is sure to keep the audience fully invested.
Although the social commentary is obvious, Influencer puts more focus on exploring the main characters and their conflict with each other. For this reason, the film rarely feels like it's hitting viewers over the head with the "Social Media Is Bad" message.
Influencer should also be commended for making the two leads so relatable, even though they shouldn't be. Despite Madison's vapid nature and CW's deranged jealousy, the superb writing and performances make these characters sympathetic.
Although there are a myriad of films that have delved into the dangers of having a large online presence, Influencer is one of the smartest.
