10 Great Horror Movies You Definitely Missed In 2023
10. Influencer
Influencer centres around social media guru Madison and a traveller, CW, whom she befriends while on holiday. Despite CW's innocent demeanour, it's obvious she covets Madison's glamorous lifestyle to the point where she will do anything to become her.
Based on the premise, Influencer sounds like a by-the-numbers slasher. But this subversive flick is anything but predictable. Before the first act is finished, the story goes in a direction no one is expecting, which is sure to keep the audience fully invested.
Although the social commentary is obvious, Influencer puts more focus on exploring the main characters and their conflict with each other. For this reason, the film rarely feels like it's hitting viewers over the head with the "Social Media Is Bad" message.
Influencer should also be commended for making the two leads so relatable, even though they shouldn't be. Despite Madison's vapid nature and CW's deranged jealousy, the superb writing and performances make these characters sympathetic.
Although there are a myriad of films that have delved into the dangers of having a large online presence, Influencer is one of the smartest.
