Although my least favorite movie genre is probably horror, I do often find horror films (if you would call this film horror- perhaps it is psychological horror) have genius openings, and there is another classic horror movie lower down on this list. Everything about this opening is fantastic, even down to the somehow unsettling bright bold colors used at the very beginning- particularly when it suddenly changes from red to blue- why a sudden color change is so unsettling to me is somewhat of a mystery, but Kubrick is a master at unsettling me in ways I can't quite understand. Even Barry Lyndon creeped me out just a little- I'm not entirely sure this was the films intent though. Kubrick knows how to use music effectively, and like The Shining, this eerily choice right at the beginning of this film grabbed my attention immediately and prepared me in the best way possible for this movie classic. The use of Beethoven in this film has even managed to forever creep me out whenever I either see Beethoven or listen to a piece of his music. Malcolm McDowell is near perfect as this movies "protagonist" and everything from his crazy intense stare, his childlike and sinister way of speaking and the slow zoom here at the start of the movie, where is is sat drinking milk (a metaphor for innocence- an important theme of the movie) at a Milk bar sends shivers down my spine.
