10 Hidden Details That Make Horror Movies Even Scarier
4. Oculus - The Face In The TV
Director Mike Flanagan is a big fan of sneaking scares into places where you aren't looking - just look at the amount of ghostly apparitions hidden in reflections and shadows in his TV series, The Haunting of Hill House.
It shouldn't be surprising then that this same attention to detail made its way over to one of Flanagan's feature films, the superbly spooky Oculus.
This flick is all about two siblings, Tim and Kaylie, reckoning with a haunted mirror responsible for the death of their family, but it's much more inventive than that admittedly quirky premise suggests.
Diving into the history of these characters, the film features extensive flashbacks to the night the mirror ruined their lives as children. During one of these, we see a young Tim watching one of those big chunky CRT televisions which, as they were want to do, ends up cutting out and displaying nothing but static.
More than just the signal tripping out though, this actually gives Tim an ominous warning of the future, as if you pause this scene at the right time, you can see the haunted visage of an older Kaylie in the screen.
It's a great scare, and further proves the two were doomed from that night onwards.
