The reason that the original Thirteen Ghosts works is arguably because of its kitsch-y premise, where a family move into a house and use special glasses to see the ghosts that haunt the abode. When you update it in 2001, it just comes off as a gimmick. Combine it with a crazy house full of bad CGI and lots (and lots) of weird clock motifs and it all comes together to make the silliest horror film youve ever seen. Thats not even beginning to mention the ridiculous-looking thirteen ghosts of the title; whilst the ideas and stories behind each ghost and their death are morbidly interesting, its all squandered in the execution. Essentially, Thir13een Ghosts is a film that doesnt know whether it wants to be an action comedy like Ghostbusters or if it actually wants to be taken seriously as a horror film. Neither result is achieved. Also, stylising the title like that will win you zero points. Ditto casting Matthew Lillard.
