Theres a fantastic quote from Gus Van Sant, when asked why he made a shot-for-shot remake of Hitchcocks 1960 game changer, Psycho. The answer? So nobody else had to. Fair enough. But this particular remake still exists, and its still pretty bad. Something has been lost in the modernisation of it all - and as creepy as Vince Vaughan is (he definitely has range, dammit, True Detective detractors be damned), hes not a scratch on Antony Perkins. The entire thing is an interesting experiment - Van Sant himself simply wanted to see what the results would be - but it still only makes for a tepid, clinical film. The telling factor was that the film barely made half its budget back worldwide. Brand recognition did nothing to help it. Nor did Anne Heche (remember her?).
