3. Mama

The advertisement for this supernatural thriller centred heavily on the involvement of the legendary Guillermo del Toro, but the director of this production was, in fact, Andy Muschetti. However, it is beneficial to have relied on Pan's Labyrinth's creator as a name because it brought a lot of attention to this wonderfully frightening and atmospheric horror.

The film tells the story of Lucas, portrayed by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who also plays the character's twin brother), and Anabel played by Jessica Chastain. After discovering Lucas' two missing nieces after a five-year rescue search, they try to reintegrate the girls into society but struggle due to how feral they have become, and soon they begin to encounter a supernatural entity that the children call "Mama".

The film has some loose parallels to the Mexican folkloric figure La Llorona, yet compellingly modernises the mythology. The daunting ghostly antagonist is brought to life with great design, and she is a persistently intimidating threat throughout the film.

It's full of atmosphere and scares, but it is a little too convoluted. However, it's fun to see Waldau again play the father and the uncle, just like in GOT.
