In spite of the fact that loyal fan bases are so often at the core of audiences the studios want to please, theyre also rarely given a chance to actually shine on the big screen, to see characters they can actually relate to. Enter Fanboys. The year is 1998, and the world is about to see the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. For any fanboy/girl, the anticipation is palpable. When a group of old high school friends finds out that one amongst them is dying from cancer, and is unlikely to make it to the prequels release, they set out on a mission to get him into Skywalker Ranch and watch a rough cut before it comes out. Its the stuff dreams are made of, getting into Skywalker Ranch. And Kyle Newmans comedy cuts the tone between moments of hilarity, especially with Jay Baruchel and Dan Fogler, and the more sombre moments that see one of their best friends facing death. And with a slew of cameos, including William Shatner as himself alongside Seth Rogen, Danny Trejo, Billy Dee Williams, Darth Mauls Ray Parks, and cult heroes Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, it really couldn't get any better than this. The film may have been a bit of a failure at the box office, failing to light the hearts of the very audiences it was trying to represent, but the attempt was brilliant, and youre rooting for this group of five friends every step of the way.
