Darren Aronofsky's mother! is pretty weird from the off, and yet, compared to where things end up, the first parts of mother! seem positively quaint by comparison.

There's never been a horror film like mother!, as instead of unfolding in any clear reality, the entire thing appears to be allegorical, with the various characters functioning as symbols - the titular character (Jennifer Lawrence) represents Mother Earth, her husband Him (Javier Bardem) represents God, and so on. 

Throughout the movie, Him has allowed various guests to break into their house and desecrate it, and, following the successful publication of some of his writing, a massive crowd enters and turns the house into a warzone. Soldiers fight with cult members, Kristen Wiig shows up as a herald, and when Mother gives birth to a baby boy, the rioters are desperate to see him, but she refuses. Eventually, when she falls asleep, Him takes the baby and gives him to the crowd - big mistake. 

In the final ten minutes of mother!, audiences are treated to a whole manner of images they'll never forget. Mother - played by one of the biggest stars in the world, lest we forget - is viciously beaten and assaulted by the crowd, she sets herself on fire, Him pulls Mother's heart out of her charred body, and of course, her baby is eaten alive by the crowd shortly before that. Truly, the stuff of nightmares.
