10 More Incredible Horror Movies You’ll Never Watch Again (And Why)

2. The Poughkeepsie Tapes

Even though The Poughkeepsie Tapes is under 90 minutes, its skin-crawling subject matter makes it feel significantly longer.

In this pseudo-documentary, a police force uncovers multiple video tapes in an abandoned house depicting serial killer Edward Carver torturing, violating, and murdering countless people, including children.

On one of these tapes, Carver places a man's head inside his wife's womb and wakes her, just to see her reaction. As messed up as that sounds, that's merely the contents of a single tape - with the cops finding over 800 tapes in Carver's lair, each of them conveying unspeakable acts of evil.

Ironically, those who survived their encounter with Carver arguably suffered a worse fate than those who didn't. One victim, Cheryl, was left so broken that she absolutely believed her abductor loved her, even after he hacked her arm off. While speaking to the police, she seems adamant that Carver will return for her and they'll live happily ever after. The segment ends by revealing Cheryl took her own life several days later.

Though Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees are frightening, The Poughkeepsie Tapes proves a flesh-and-blood human can be infinitely scarier.
