10 Most Hated Lord Of The Rings Characters

Seriously, who tries to burn their own son alive?!

There aren't many movie franchises in the history of the industry that can boast the sheer popularity as The Lord of the Rings. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest film trilogies ever, even 20 years after the release of The Fellowship of the Ring.

The fantastical aspects of Middle-earth, the huge scale battle sequences, and the fight between good and evil are all integral to its success, but more so than anything it is the characters. From great wizards like Gandalf, to the smallest Hobbits of the Shire, anyone can make a difference in the world.

However, while no one has a bad word to say about the likes of Aragorn and Samwise Gamgee, there are some characters in Middle-earth that are hated by fans. In any fight between good and evil there will always be those that are never supposed to be liked, but these characters often go deeper than that.

While most of the franchise's antagonists are typically hated, there are even some heroes that were never able to earn the love of audiences.

This list is populated with both the good and bad that fans greatly disliked, whether by design or not.

10. The Eagles

With The Lord of the Rings trilogy came one of the most infamous plot holes in cinematic memory that has driven many fans crazy for the last 20 years. If the Eagles could save Gandalf from atop Orthanc and save Frodo and Sam from the molten fire of Mount Doom, why couldn't they fly the Ring to Mordor in the first place?

While this is seen as one of the greatest trilogies in the history of cinema, there has always been this blemish in the eyes of many, even though it is not technically a plot hole.

There is an answer to the question, which is that the Eagles were never Gandalf's to command, they were simply rescuing him and doing him a favour when they saved him, Sam, and Frodo. They wouldn't go anywhere near Mordor before for the same reasons no one else would.

So, though this isn't technically a plot hole as such, the films did do a poor job of explaining the Eagles so much so that many fans still see it as one anyway. The birds have infuriated audiences for years, even though the books hold a perfectly valid reason for their abstaining from the journey to the Black Gate.
