10. The Eagles

With The Lord of the Rings trilogy came one of the most infamous plot holes in cinematic memory that has driven many fans crazy for the last 20 years. If the Eagles could save Gandalf from atop Orthanc and save Frodo and Sam from the molten fire of Mount Doom, why couldn't they fly the Ring to Mordor in the first place?

While this is seen as one of the greatest trilogies in the history of cinema, there has always been this blemish in the eyes of many, even though it is not technically a plot hole.

There is an answer to the question, which is that the Eagles were never Gandalf's to command, they were simply rescuing him and doing him a favour when they saved him, Sam, and Frodo. They wouldn't go anywhere near Mordor before for the same reasons no one else would.

So, though this isn't technically a plot hole as such, the films did do a poor job of explaining the Eagles so much so that many fans still see it as one anyway. The birds have infuriated audiences for years, even though the books hold a perfectly valid reason for their abstaining from the journey to the Black Gate.
