We first meet Yoda as an old, strange, exiled creature, one seemingly unlikely to actually be possessing any great power (that's certainly what Luke thinks at first). However, it soon becomes apparent that Yoda is the wisest of all Jedi, the one who truly understands what the Force is and what it's capable of. As long alluded to, and finally seen in the prequels, his status among other Jedi was second to none - he was the Order's Grand Master. Despite his size (which is a key part of his power, somewhat through misdirection), he had an incredible fighting style that meant he was a match for anybody (although not all fans choose to remember those moments. You could argue about his failures, with the Jedi Purge happening when he was in command, but a counter argument would be that it shows just how in tune with the Light Side of the Force he is that he survived, saving countless other lives as well.
