From wise and powerful figures such as old Ben Kenobi or Jedi Master Yoda, loveable rogues such as Han Solo or Lando Calrissian, to devilishly evil foes like Darth Vader or Emperor Palpatine, Star Wars is a film saga that boasts one of the most colourful and imaginative collections of characters ever found in the world of film. Since the opening scroll of bright yellow text against the pitch blankness of deep space first started to grip the world in A New Hope back in 1977, George Lucas' universe has been filled with characters whose lines and actions have become both recognisable and memorable even today.

With all the main heroes and villains being given the screentime to flip around with their lightsabers whirling away, or flying their space fighters around the middle of intergalactic battle, it's easy to forget about some of the more subtle characters injected into the franchise over the years.

From mentors, loving family members and fearsome warriors, there are a whole host of underrated Star Wars characters who deserve more love and recognition than what they get from the community. Here's our top ten picks for Star Wars' most underrated characters.

10. Qui-Gon Jinn

Calm, composed and very much his own man, the ins and outs of Qui-Gon Jinn's depth really didn't get to shine through enough during his time on screen in The Phantom Menace. As well as being calm, collected and a truly excellent swordsman, Qui-Gon had a real knack for reading and understanding the world and characters around him.

Much like individuals such as Count Dooku, Qui-Gon understood the role the Jedi Order had to play in the Galaxy and rejected the stubborn arrogance the Council in particular had begun to exhibit by the time the main series kicks off. Qui-Gon understood that Jedi needed to have a full understanding of both Light and Dark sides of the Force, and being away from the Council allowed him to develop skills such as Ghosting that only Yoda and Anakin Skywalker could master.

His fears for the Order would quickly be proven correct as the arrogance of the Jedi eventually clouded them so much that it eventually reached the point where they couldn't even sense when a Sith Lord was sat right in front of them.

Who knows what might have happened had Qui-Gon survived his duel with Maul and gone onto train the young Anakin Skywalker.
