2. Everyone Dies - Bugonia
Even if you've seen Save the Green Planet!, the film on which Yorgos Lanthimos' black comedy Bugonia is based, you probably didn't expect the film to end quite like that.
The story ends with conspiracy theorist Teddy (Jesse Plemons) being blown up by his own bomb vest, after which it's revealed that Michelle (Emma Stone) is indeed an alien empress just as Teddy believed.
Michelle returns to her spaceship and consults with her fellow Andromedans, who conclude that their attempts to nurture humanity - which they created - have failed.
Michelle then walks over to a model of a flat Earth and pops a bubble, at which point Lanthimos cuts to a lengthy montage of the entire human race having been killed instantaneously.
The montage, set to Marlene Dietrich's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," consists of eerie, static shots of humanity suddenly ended while doing the most ordinary of things - raving at a nightclub, working at the fish market, hang out at the beach, having sex, praying, and so on.
The final shot then shows bees returning to Teddy's apiary, confirming that life goes on beyond humanity's extinction.
Considering that Save the Green Planet! concludes on a more abrupt note where Earth basically explodes like the Death Star, few were expecting such a weirdly, beautifully haunting final tableau to close things out. Never change, Yorgos.
