A Hasbro cinematic universe might sound like the most unnecessary thing since the sequel to Donnie Darko, but the world is getting one nevertheless, and 2020's GI Joe movie could become its centrepiece.

Paramount Studios announced a slew of films based on the toy company's biggest properties late last year, revealing little about them beyond titles and release dates, and its third attempt at a GI Joe film is no less shrouded in mystery.

It's unclear whether the project will follow on from the events of 2009's Rise of the Cobra and 2013's Retaliation, or wipe the slate clean and reboot the property.

Paramount has also announced a Micronauts movie for release in the same year, and given that the two franchises have crossed over in other mediums before, there's a good chance post-credits scenes and setups will tie them together.

D.J. Caruso was previously attached to direct GI Joe 3 and he spoke at length of his plans to cross the series over with Transformers, but since he has long since bowed out of the film, it's unclear whether this is still the plan.
