10 Movies We Desperately Wanted To Happen (But Never Will)

2. Spike

Spike was a fan favourite character in the hit TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and after the show and it’s spin off Angel wrapped, Warner Brothers were keen to continue to cash in on him. However, time has drifted, and with actor James Marsters not actually being an ageless vampire, Spike’s chances have been and gone.

Marsters himself admitted as much in 2004, saying he’d be happy to reprise the role, but only for the next five years. After that, he feared, he would no longer look convincing as the immortal Spike. In the cold light of 2019, he’s definitely been proven right.

The first choice for such a film was Angel, but star David Boreanaz was only interested a major theatrical release. When this couldn’t be guaranteed, he signed on to Bones instead. After almost 250 episodes leading Bones as Seeley Booth, he clearly made the right call.

Despite not getting their first choice though, Warner Brothers were still happy to proceed. Buffy/Angel fans were happy for the magic to keep going too. Joss Whedon, however, was moving from TV into features, and had too much on his plate to return to Spike, and thus the project drifted.
