3. Hellraiser: Origins

Hellraiser is the iconic cult horror film by Clive Barker, based on his own novella, The Hellbound Heart. It has spawned nine sequels since the first way back in 1987, though none have really picked up considerable traction.

With so many movies in the franchise, one cancelled movie shouldn’t seem like such a big deal. However, Hellraiser: Origins would have been the first movie since the second one to have had Barker writing, and the first time since the 1987 original that he would be back in the director’s chair.

For niche horror fans, another Barker led Hellraiser would have been a huge coup.

It turns out though, that studios didn’t have faith that the hype from these hardcore fans was enough to justify the budget Barker wanted. He took the unprecedented step of only shooting the trailer, and uploading that to YouTube in 2013.

In an ideal world, the trailer would have gone viral and studios would have been falling over themselves to throw money at Barker. In the end, it didn’t really penetrate beyond his immediate sphere of fans, and with no backing, the movie was called off.
