10 Movies Where The Hero Originally Died At The End
4. Jim - 28 Days Later
28 Days Later is one of the movies that kick-started the zombie genre revival (even though they’re not technically zombies), although what really stands out is that, despite its grim tone and gory violence, it has a surprisingly upbeat ending. That wasn't always the case, though.
Danny Boyle freely admits he had problems picking the right ending, and shot a few versions just to be safe. The one he prefers is the version where Jim is taken to the hospital, and despite Selena’s best efforts he dies from the gunshot wound the Major gave him. In Boyle’s opinion, this rounds off Jim’s journey; he begins the story waking up in a hospital bed, and ends it dying in one.
Of course test audiences didn’t warm to this, so Boyle went with an alternate take where Jim survives and gets rescued with the others.
