10 Predictions For Sony's Universe Of Marvel Characters

Could the MCU have a very real rival thanks to the emergence of Sony's Spider-Verse?

You've no doubt heard of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe, but what about, uh, SPUMC? That's the awkward sounding acronym for Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, a world most fans prefer to refer to as the "Spider-Verse."

Made up of franchises like Venom and Morbius, not to mention upcoming releases such as Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web, it's a separate Marvel Universe consisting of characters solely from the world of Spider-Man. While Tom Holland's Peter Parker is currently part of the MCU, plans call for him to appear in the "SPUMC" sooner rather than later, and Sony Pictures clearly has some big ideas.

Whether those will end up working out is hard to say, especially given the studio's spotty track record. However, looking ahead to the future, it's definitely easy to get excited about what's to come, and that's where these predictions for SPUMC's future come in.

From future team-ups to possible event movies, and even what comes next Spider-Man, this in-depth look at what this comic book universe moving forward will either get you excited about Sony's plans for these heroes...or wish that these franchises were under the control of Marvel Studios just like the recently regained X-Men and Fantastic Four!

10. Venom 3 Adds Spider-Man To The Mix

The Venom sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, is set to be released next June (after being pushed back from this October), and while the first instalment may have been mostly terrible, there's a lot of excitement surrounding the follow-up. It helps that Andy Serkis is directing the action this time, though the addition of Woody Harrelson's Carnage is perhaps most noteworthy.

Given the box office haul of 2018's Venom, a third instalment is surely inevitable, and that's the film you can probably expect to see Tom Holland's Spider-Man factor into. Fans want that to happen, Tom Hardy and Tom Holland want it to happen, and studio execs are smart enough to realise such a crossover would equal big box office returns.

The prospect of a three-way battle between Spider-Man, Venom, and Carnage is undeniably intriguing (even without Marvel Studios' creative involvement), and Sony has a guaranteed event movie on their hands here. It's bound to happen, but here's hoping it's not something they drop the ball on because no one is crying out for another Amazing Spider-Man 2-style disaster.
