Okay, okay, we know the propertys called The Fantastic Four. This isnt Shakespeare. But its also not a pantomime. We dont need godawful dance scenes, pratfalls or mugging to camera to sell this franchise. A better approach would be to play the sillier aspects completely straight. This calls for some serious chutzpah, but when it works its a beautiful thing. Look at Leslie Nielsons deadpan, dignified performance in the Naked Gun movies. Mark Wahlberg does something very similar in The Other Guys, a character that doesnt seem to realise how ridiculous everything around him is. Some self-aware, sly scripting and a deadpan wit will pay dividends here. Its much more of a recipe for success than playing everything with a wink and a giggle. Less cheese, more pickle!
