This writer, for one, has always had a bone to pick with the liberties the original film took with regard to its own rules. The plot was heavily driven by the fact that all the Freddy reality tricks happened in dreams so of course, Nancy is wide awake when her phone sprouts a tongue, as well as when her mother disappears into her bed/portal to the netherworld. Her equally un-dreaming father is also there for that last one. Dream Warriors was much more mindful of (sometimes cleverly) separating the real world from the dream world. In general, it sticks to the franchise commandments better than the first movie, and the narrative is more effective for it. There's a better use of the one wink trope, and some scenes do a great job of sneaking up on the viewer instead of screaming meanwhile, in Dreamland. For example, (1987 spoiler alert) when Joey is lured away by nurse Freddy while everyone is hypnotized, unbeknownst to them or the viewer. Granted, a licensed hypnotherapist would scoff at the plotting, but that's a pretty small section of the audience. Is the reanimated Freddy skeleton scene getting a pass here? Not really; it just throws in possession, a fundamental horror element. And hey, it's a skeleton in a ghost movie what's it gonna do, not spring murderously to life?
