One of the many remarkable things about Skyfall was how new writer John Logan and director Sam Mendes balanced a serious thriller plot with the light touch and wit absent from the previous Craig Bonds. Yes, James€™s one-liners can go very wrong€”it€™s a steep slope from €œShocking, positively shocking€ to €œI thought Christmas only came once a year€ (hang your head, Pierce Brosnan!). But take a look at the quantum of gags in Quantum of Solace to see how dreary 007 can be without a few quips. Christopher Nolan€™s films are generally pretty po-faced, despite the best efforts of Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman to wring humour from their surroundings. And as mentioned above, a grimmer Bond would, at this stage, revisit well-trodden ground.
