10 Reasons Why Total Remake Sucks

By Shaun Munro /

5. Too. Much. Lens. Flare.

Perhaps the most pernickety entry on this list, but a valid complaint nonetheless. CGI-infused lens flare has been overused throughout the last decade of science fiction films in particular; take the new Star Trek reboot which, while a surprisingly excellent film, suffers from slight over-stylisation, resulting in some jarring moments as the crew members dart around the ship, with lens flare obscuring much of the screen. It's an odd choice as it would purport to give the films a more verite-esque aesthetic, despite the fact that they are obviously incredibly realistic; who are they trying to fool? While the style of this new Total Recall might be one of its few good points, Wiseman goes overboard as usual, and drowns the action sequences in particular amid abusive employing of these flares. What's most bothersome is how these flares appear to be added even when the scene does not feature a strong light source; it is purely stylistic, and quite nonsensical in this stead.
