10 Recent Movie Characters You Were Happy To See Die
9. Gary Barkovitch - The Long Walk
In dystopian television game show films, there is often an overarching antagonist that pits, theoretically at least, equally oppressed people against each other. However, there are certain exceptions where this isn't quite true.
There were the careers in The Hunger Games who actively trained and wanted to be picked, and in The Long Walk, there was Gary Barkovitch (Charlie Plummer). While the Major (Mark Hamill) and his guards were the clear antagonists of the movie, Barkovitch was there as something else for the walkers to deal with.
The majority of the boys walking found some sort of connection and camaraderie with each other, something of a bond over the shared horror they were enduring, but Barkovitch did not. He constantly tried to pick fights, antagonise, and force the others into mistakes that would see them earn a warning or worse.
Barkovitch directly caused the death of another walker, and though his conscience clearly struggled with what happened, it was difficult to forgive him. Watching a film like this, it was clear that at least almost every major character would die, and while most were tough to watch, there was a certain sense of satisfaction and justice with Barkovitch, even if it was more gruesome than it needed to be.
