Dogma wasn't exactly a film that was reverential to Christianity, as you can well imagine. The biting satire featured some heavy criticisms of the Catholic Church, and had Chris Rock playing Jesus's half brother. Oh yeah, and God is a woman and Jesus was black. Needless to say, Kevin Smith's dark comedy had right wing America clutching their pearls and steadying themselves against the furniture. You have to hand it to him, though -- his research into Christian lore is top notch, and he's not just taking the same old potshots against religion that everyone else does. His interpretation of biblical figures are clever and, despite being occasionally sophomoric, are surprisingly more comforting than their textual counterparts. It's clear throughout the entire film that Smith's issue is not with faith, but with organized religion, which is something that most atheists can relate to.
