When I first purchased the campy Arnold Schwarzenegger classic Commando on Blu-ray, I was extremely disappointed to observe how brutally it had been chopped down, if still furnished with an 18 rating. The reason? The German master print - which was heavily cut upon release - was idiotically used as the master for the home video R2 release as well, meaning that we get the same limp, sterile edit as the notoriously conservative Germans. Some of the more awkward and unfortunate edits include Arnie's murder on the plane being shortened (he simply elbows him to death rather than breaking his neck), Bill Duke's graphic death being awkwardly cut so the score doesn't even line up properly, the brilliantly violent tool shed sequence (where Arnie slams axe into a guy's nether-regions, and chops a guy's arm off with a machete), and Bennett's climactic death by way of a giant lead pipe. Basically, all the best moments are toned down, and given the audience for a politically incorrect, irreverent 1980s action film such as this, that's removed pretty much everything they want to see. Tracking down an uncut version is still a tad awkward, but E-Bay is largely your best bet these days. Note: the uncut shed scene is awesome.
