10 Sacred Movie Franchises That Should Never Be Remade Or Rebooted

8. Dirty Harry

Harry Callahan was very much a product of his time, so it seems unlikely that the iconic antihero would even be the subject of a beat-for-beat remake, never mind any actor who would be either brave or foolish enough to try and follow in the legendary footsteps of Clint Eastwood.

Even Eastwood himself starred in several less-than-stellar Dirty Harry movies, and by the time fifth entry The Dead Pool arrived it was clear that the title character was starting to approach his sell-by date. That being said, no amount of inferior sequels could ever put a dent in the reputation of the first installment, which marked the undoubted pinnacle of the regular collaborations between Eastwood and director Don Siegel.

Both Magnum Force and The Enforcer were more than adequate follow-ups before the wheels started getting a little shaky, and the industry has more than enough dime-a-dozen cop thrillers doing the rounds on an annual basis to stop them from diving deep into the back catalogue to slap a fresh coat of paint on Dirty Harry. Besides, they'd probably just market the entire thing on the back of somebody else giving the famous 'Do you feel lucky, punk?' speech.
