10 Scariest Movie Moments Of 2019
2. Annabelle Comes Home - The Ferryman's Coins
Who would have thought that The Conjuring would end up spawning a seven movie franchise? Or that Annabelle would end up becoming one of the modern icons of horror? Though Annabelle is a character built off lots of jump scares, Annabelle does them so much better than her competitors, and in a weird way, they feel earned.
The difference with Annabelle's jump scares (and The Conjuring's in general) is that they usually signify something genuinely scary. It never turns out to be just a cat; it's normally an actual scare which is filmed in such an intensely sudden way that it makes you jump.
These movies tend to be full to the brim with quote unquote 'proper' screams, and Annabelle Comes Home is no different.
In this scene, though Annabelle herself isn't involved, the Ferryman definitely copies her brand of sudden spooks. An old coin rolls into the hallway, just as the lights go out. As Mary bends down to pick it up, the metal starts to glimmer. She's clearly terrified and confused, but she doesn't know exactly why. It's not until the Ferryman lurches out of the dark with those same coins for eyes that we can finally let that pent up scream out.
