4. Ma - Dog's Blood

Horror movies aren't often character vehicles, but that's exactly what Ma was for Octavia Spencer. Centred around a lonely woman (Spencer) who lets a bunch of teenagers host a house party over at her place, things quickly unravel in this psychological thriller.

That's unravel in two senses of the word, since not only does Spencer's psyche unspool, the film runs out of juice after a while too. A great premise which might have explored loneliness and depression in a new, interesting way, instead it never really got out of second gear.

That was still enough to provide a couple of great scares though, as this moment only goes to show.

In terms of set pieces, there were quite a few deaths and attacks in Ma which scored high on the scareometer, even if there were too many lulls in between. Killing Ben with the dog's blood though was definitely the worst, and certainly not one for the squeamish.

In terms of movie deaths, it feels truly unique, which is apparently exactly what the movie makers were going for. Ma injects the unconscious Ben with dog's blood, knowing that his body will reject it and ultimately kill him from the inside out.
