10 Things Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special Can Learn from The Avengers

3. In The Case of the Special, Make UNIT Similar to SHIELD

In my opinion, you can€™t have an anniversary special like this without UNIT. Now, normally they are just military, but having them serve an expanded SHIELD-like purpose would give an air of believability to proceedings. We can€™t just show The Doctors being clever and saving the day by outwitting their enemies and flicking some switches. No, this is war. Lives will be lost, and people will die. Epic, and impactful. Show the full scale of the destruction the Doctor brings. With UNIT bringing out the big guns, literally. Give this iconic organisation their moment of glory. And make them the no-nonsense organisation that brings The Doctors together. Now, I€™m not saying we have a Nick Fury character, or an Agent Coulson, but they need a massive base, and they need to be bigger and hide secrets that even The Doctor didn€™t know about. Again, conflict with the military, and his €˜no-guns€™ policy, but he realizes weapons need to be used to save himself, the planet and all mankind, because no help is coming. So UNIT becomes more than just a military organisation. But they shouldn€™t be like this all the time- just in these extreme circumstances.
