10 Upcoming Horrors We Can't Believe Are Happening

2. The Exorcist

Though David Gordon Green intended to launch a new Exorcist trilogy, the negative reception for Exorcist Believer put those plans in jeopardy.

Universal Pictures wasn't ready to let The Exorcist go, though, since they had sunk too much money into getting the rights for the property. For that reason, they decided to replace Green's proposed sequel with a reboot.

Although 2027's The Exorcist will be disassociated from Green's iteration, it feels like Believer has tainted the project. Considering there hasn't been a promising entry in the franchise in decades, cynicism surrounding this incarnation is warranted.

Fortunately, the upcoming film is being helmed by Mike Flanagan, whose experience in horror is almost without peer. The new Exorcist has a monumental cast, including Scarlett Johansson, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Sasha Calle, and John Leguizamo. It also boasts a few Flanagan regulars, such as his wife Kate Siegel, Carla Cugino, Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, and Carl Lumbly.

Flanagan said he has dreamed of directing an Exorcist movie for a long time and hopes to craft the scariest adaptation imaginable without relying on nostalgia; basically, the complete opposite of Exorcist: Believer.

It may be an eternity coming, but 2027 could be the year when The Exorcist finally makes a real comeback.
