10 Upcoming Movies Which Are Already Doomed
These upcoming films are thoroughly cooked.
Though real film lovers don't tend to actively root against most movies, sometimes the pre-release vibes are just so thoroughly off that any other outcome but total and utter failure seems completely off the table.
Sometimes the tea leaves make it clear that critical and/or commercial oblivion is surely what's on the horizon, and so all we can do is wait with bated breath to see it play out for ourselves. Perhaps the trailers didn't make much of a dent, maybe test screenings were disastrous, or extensive reports of a troubled production made it hard to be truly excited in any way.
Whatever the reason, it's clear that the following ten upcoming films are all facing one hell of an uphill struggle to score either positive reviews or box office success - let alone both.
Of course, nothing is certifiably guaranteed until a movie is out in the wild for us all to behold, and it's always nice to be surprised by a probable-bomb defying its apparent destiny, but you probably shouldn't get your hopes up for these ten films succeeding...
10. The Dog Stars
Ridley Scott's new film The Dog Stars is based upon Peter Heller's widely acclaimed 2012 novel. And yet, if the trailer is any indication, Scott has apparently adapted it into a thunderously generic post-apocalyptic thriller, the sort of which was so very in vogue in the early 2010s.
Scott's modern-day filmography is basically a coin flip in terms of quality, and so as beloved as Heller's source material might be, that's absolutely no guarantee of Ridley turning in a cinematic banger. He's nothing if not a filmmaker held entirely at the mercy of the scripts he works from, and with screenwriter Mark L. Smith having a varied career ranging from The Revenant to Twisters, that also feels like a 50/50 situation.
In any event, the trailer roused desperately little interest online despite the buzzy cast, and with a release date set for the arse-end of August - far away from awards season - it feels like 20th Century Studios basically knows they've got a bit of a dud on their hands.
Even if The Dog Stars does turn out well artistically, the film is R-rated with a $110 million budget, so it faces one hell of a steep climb to profitability.
