10 Upcoming Movies Which Are Already Doomed

10. The Dog Stars

Ridley Scott's new film The Dog Stars is based upon Peter Heller's widely acclaimed 2012 novel. And yet, if the trailer is any indication, Scott has apparently adapted it into a thunderously generic post-apocalyptic thriller, the sort of which was so very in vogue in the early 2010s.

Scott's modern-day filmography is basically a coin flip in terms of quality, and so as beloved as Heller's source material might be, that's absolutely no guarantee of Ridley turning in a cinematic banger. He's nothing if not a filmmaker held entirely at the mercy of the scripts he works from, and with screenwriter Mark L. Smith having a varied career ranging from The Revenant to Twisters, that also feels like a 50/50 situation.

In any event, the trailer roused desperately little interest online despite the buzzy cast, and with a release date set for the arse-end of August - far away from awards season - it feels like 20th Century Studios basically knows they've got a bit of a dud on their hands.

Even if The Dog Stars does turn out well artistically, the film is R-rated with a $110 million budget, so it faces one hell of a steep climb to profitability.
