One of the best Christmas films ever made if also one of the weirdest, Gremlins begins as young Billy is given a present by his father, a mysterious creature called a Mogwai, a cute, furry animal which Billy names Gizmo. We all remember the three rules; don't let it see bright sunlight, don't get it wet, and most importantly, never feed it after midnight, a rule that Corey Feldman ends up disobeying, causing all manner of chaos for the town once the titular Gremlins are spawned out of Gizmo's back. What's great about Gremlins is that Gizmo's introduction suggests that the film might be a sweet comedy about an alien creature, but once the more monstrous members of his species show up, the film becomes a mischievous, brilliant riot. The Gremlins get all the best moments, specifically when they mess with the cranky old lady Mrs Deagle, sending her flying out of a window by way of her stair-lift. The film is darker than many expected at the time, though it was nevertheless a mammoth hit, and remains a classic I watch year in and year out.
