Soylent Green is a gritty and claustrophobic take on a futuristic America. Charlton Heston stars as a detective wandering through New York City, now bursting at the seams with a population of over 40 million impoverished and ravenous people. The only choices of food stuff is an oddly luminescent jelly that comes in the three flavours of red, green and yellow.If youve heard anything about this film, you probably know the denouement at the end (if not, youre in for a delightfully ugly twist). No matter how many times you return to the film, when the camera pans into Hestons face and the grim realisation floods over his wide eyes, theres still a shuddering chill that travels down your spine and into your stomach. Lovers of Turkish Delight beware.
