4. Kung Fu Panda 3

Kung Fu Panda 3 was without question one of the weirdest box office stories of 2016, grossing significantly less than both previous entries in the franchise (which pulled in $631.7 million and $665.6 million respectively), even with a huge release in China and the expectation that many animated threequels end up grossing by far the most of the series.

Instead, Panda's third go-around had to settle for bronze, and while still a considerable hit, allowed Logan to scrape by and defeat it at the box office. Considering the power of the kiddie market, that's a damn fine feat, albeit one that's more due to Kung Fu Panda 3's anomalous, unexpectedly low final take than anything.
