Trying to play Oscar prognosticator this early in the year is always risky business: last summer yours truly declared that Birth of a Nation would probably end up the Best Picture front-runner by year's end, but for many, many reasons (one being that the film really wasn't that good), it ultimately didn't happen.

A seemingly much safer bet this year is indie dramedy The Big Sick, which has scored near-universal critical acclaim so far, and brings with it no apparent exterior baggage, such as its director being accused of rape, as in the case of Birth of a Nation's Nate Parker.

With critics roundly praising the film for its deeply humanistic tone, humour and excellent cast, this could be The Little Indie That Could, the rare Sundance darling that manages to sustain momentum all the way to the podium next year.
