5. Netflix Funds Its First Blockbuster Movie

Netflix has been killing it lately, building a fast-growing library of self-styled Netflix Originals in both TV and film, and showing enough respect to artists that even Martin Scorsese himself has inked a deal to release his much-anticipated gangster flick The Irishman to the streaming platform day-and-date.

Netflix reportedly paid approximately $105m to fund the movie, which clearly isn't far off the price tag for a fully-fledged blockbuster, and so the next logical step seems to be for them to bankroll their own tentpole films.

Naturally, the big appeal to many of these effects-driven films is seeing them on a huge screen, but with home cinema systems being as sophisticated as they are these days, bringing premium, $200 million movies into people's homes day-and-date really feels like the next logical step of their business strategy.

While such a film probably won't release for a few more years, it'd make sense for the project to be at least confirmed before the end of 2017.
