11 Movie Franchises We Wish Weren’t Dead
3. The Godfather
Despite the “misunderstood” final chapter, Francis Ford Coppola’s classic trilogy is one of cinema’s finest achievements and will be forever revered as the highpoint of the mob genre.
Coppola, coming from a large Italian-American background himself, proved to be the perfect man to bring to pass an adaptation of Mario Puzo’s epic novel, understanding on a profound level the themes about family and the American dream.
Part II was a flawless expansion of the world anchored in Part I, and as for Part III... well, it served its purpose in tying up Michael Corleone’s (Al Pacino) journey.
Could There Be A Comeback?
During a 2012 interview with GQ, Coppola said of Part IV, “The amount of money they’d have to pay me to do it probably doesn’t even exist. I don’t know what the plot would be - all the people are dead.”
So it seems Coppola is firmly out of the chair, but perhaps another filmmaker might feel differently. Back when the idea of The Godfather II was first mooted, Coppola, not wanting to make a sequel, suggested that Martin Scorsese take the reins… Now there’s a thing.
